Last week, 2 packages I bid on eBay was shipped to my home. I opened them to inspect the DVDs for damages at which point Allison got curious about whom this package is for. She just had her birthday 2 weeks ago. We must’ve mentioned to her that she is growing taller. Allison was probably proud of the compliment and retained it in her memory because here’s the quick conversation I had with her:

Allison: "Daddy, what are these movies?"
Rex: "These are DVDs of very old Chinese movies."
A: "Do you like to watch these?"
R: "These are birthday presents for Grandma, they are her favorites. She watched them a long time ago."
A: "Her birthday is coming?"
E: "Yes, in a couple of weeks!"
A: "Oh cool! I can’t wait to see Grandma on her birthday, she’ll be taller!"

Man, is she cute… 🙂

AllisonI had one of those insomniac nights this weekend. After spending hours on my computer I peered through the window and saw the first light of day. I knew it was going to be a good and special day. It was my baby girl’s birthday– she’s turning 4!

As I was thinking about Allison, I heard hurried footsteps. It was Katelyn; she woke up at the crack of dawn to remind me to wrap Allison’s presents. She excitedly agreed to help me. We wrapped two presents and left them in the middle of the living room as Katelyn suggested.

As Allison staggered out of bed with eyes barely opened, we were ready for her. Katelyn, Suzanne & I ran to her and showered her with birthday kisses. We led her to the living room where she discovered her presents. We then surrounded her and did a family happy-birthday dance and gave her a family group hug. She liked that.

After getting dressed, we all went to the family’s favorite breakfast place: Hobee’s. After Allison ordered her usual: Mickey Mouse pancake, I whispered some instructions to the waiter. When the waiter brought out her pancake with a birthday candle on top of it, we sang happy birthday to her with the help of some in the patrons of the restaurant. Allison seemed to dig that as she smiled from ear to ear.

In the afternoon, we had a little birthday party at Chuck E. Cheese. This year we decided to play it small and low key, so it was just our family & the Tieu’s. We ended the day with Allison opening her presents. She was most excited when she opened the present from her mom: Cinderella’s toy computer. Allison spotted this toy and been asking for it for months!

As I reflect on the past year, the one thing most noticeable about her is her communication. She is much more vocal than last year; in fact she’s always talking up a storm. She’s often the loudest and talks the most in the house! She still can be very stubborn and still is causing much of the fighting with her sister. She constantly testing her boundaries and my patience. I tried to be more stern this past year with her whenever she misbehaves but her mom still accuses me of spoiling her.

She also showed some form of independence this past year, she participated in sleep-overs and spent the few nights away from home and without her parents. She was learning to participate too so she’s not left out as often when she plays with sister & her cousin Malia. She started her second year at pre-school; this year without her sister who is a kindergartener at a different school. She can write her name. She still loves to draw and improved beyond just simple stick figures. She started to color very well– inside the lines and all.

The thing most fun to me is the fact that she loves being photographed by her dad. She became more comfortable and learned to smile and pose naturally in front of the camera. She always ready to crack a beautiful smile for me. Thanks kid for indulging your old dad…

Happy birthday #4, baby!

A few of the pics are posted here

I came home a few days ago, my dear Allison excitedly ran out and greeted me at the door, proudly showed me her alphabet crown. Her pre-school awards the paper crown when a kid learns the letters and their sounds. Yeah!

I was very happy and proud of my little munch-kin. And as a reward for a job well done, I made her a promise of getting her a toy of her choice.

Allison

This is one of my favorite shots of Allison I managed to snap this past summer.

Katelyn smilingTwo weeks ago, Katelyn takes her first step in her education: she began her first day of kindergarten at Eaton Elementary. The first day of school is monumental in any child’s life. I was excited for her…

I took the morning off work and got her prepared for the first day of school. She was very excited. I figured taking the kids to the school playground often this summer helped with getting Katelyn familiar with the place. Still, I sensed a bit of nervousness in Katelyn when she began lining up for her class. She probably realized that the school is much bigger than her preschool, with lots more kids. But she was happily lined up with the other kids, smiled and blew kisses to her father when her teacher Ms Celini lead the kids into the classroom.

Katelyn goes to classI was happy and very proud of Katelyn that day. I hope she does well, makes friends, and have a fun-loaded 1st year!

…I snapped a few shots for keepsake.

A conversation at breakfast yesterday morning:

Rex: “Allison, please finish your breakfast!”
Allison: “But I’m full.”
R: “But you eat so little, how will be grow big and strong?”
A: “… Daddy, when I’m 54 I’ll be a giant!”

I busted out laughing. Her choice of number and the similar context reminded me of the Beatles’ song “When I’m Sixty-Four”:

Will you still need me, will you still feed me, when I’m 64?

This past weekend, we head up to the Sierra for a short camping trip. Camping with the 2 Brads is interesting.

One Brad of course gets all the attention from the women, as evidenced by the photo below with both Suzanne & Sandra looking at him longingly. He’s a diva who’s simply just suck at camping, can’t even toast a marshmallow or make a cup of tea for himself. This center-of-the-universe figure spends the entire weekend whining about Angelina this and Angelina that… Unbearable!

The other less-famous Brad on the other hand is a skillful outdoorsman — be it tending the fire, fishing trouts, singing camp songs, coming up with kiddie games or making Minnie Mouse pancakes. Can’t speak for the women but I’d rather camp with Brad J. over Angelina’s boy anytime!

Katelyn: “Knock, Knock”
Rex: “Who’s there?”
K: “Nobody!”
R: “Nobody who?”
K: silence…
R: “Nobody who?”
K: silence again…
R: gets it finally & laughs hysterically

Allison was listening and now she wants to participates…

Allison: “Knock, Knock”
Suzanne: “Who’s there?”
A: “Penguin!”
S: “Penguin who?”
A: silence…
S: “Penguin who?”
A: silence again…
S: didn’t get it but had to pretend the joke makes sense and belt out a hearty laugh…

Cowboy Junkies is an alternative rock band from Toronto with their down-right depressing lyrics, nice blend of guitar and harmonica, subtle rhythms and of course the original voice of Margo Timmins. Their melancholic music is a mix of blues, country, folk, and rock. With a lot of depressing with titles like “To Love Is to Bury”, “‘Cause Cheap Is how I Feel”, “Lonely sinking feeling”, their style is a bit off-beat, which to me is appealing. In fact, the band makes a point of evading mainstream: quitting major record label and starts distributing their own music with their independent label. How cool is that?

I first heard their music during my college years; my room-mate Minh had a copy of The Trinity Session. trinity sessionsThe album was recorded live in a single day in a church in Toronto and basically launched the band, an early album that remains one of their best work. At first, I didn’t think much of the music after casual listening. But during a late night study, I was hooked on their tunes! Guess it’s got to do with ambiance and the undivided attention from a pair of headphones. I found their music captivating and they became one of my favorite bands. I’ve been following their works ever since that one late night.

cowboy junkiesSo I was looking forward to their concert all this summer. Last Wednesday, after the kids were done with their swimming classes, we got them ready to spent the night with their cousin Malia. After their aunt Betty drove them off, Suzanne & I headed to the Mountain Winery. It was our first time there. There were obvious signs of renovations everywhere. But it has a breath-taking view of the valley. The venue is small, intimate and beautiful with the valley below on one side and the back-drop of wineries on the other. I wish I had a chance to take some photographs during the sunset. We arrived as the opening act started playing, so no chance to stroll and tour the place. I lugged along my camera but had to hide it in my jacket as I was scared away by the posted signs banning non-consumer cameras. I was able to sneak in a few clicks though. 🙂

The Bittersweets opened for the Cowboy Junkies and they were very good by the way. The band even blogged about that nite. The lead singer Hannah Prater seemed very down-to-earth and had very nice voice. Not sure the title of the last song they performed but it was a beautiful song that starts with “Good night San Francisco…” (can’t go wrong with lyrics like that). I’ll probably order their debut CD; very talented band and I have no doubt we’ll hear more of them in the coming years.

This was the 3rd time I saw The Cowboy Junkies’ concert and I’d say it was as good as the 1st concert I saw them during the Lay It Down tour (Lay It Down was an amazing album). I was hoping for more numbers from Lay It Down and they didn’t get around to their own rendition of Lou Reed’s Sweet Jane as I’d hoped. But they did a few songs from their old album The Trinity Session including Blue Moon. They closed the night with Margo’s masterful rendition of Misguided Angel— it was best of the night.

The Cowboy Junkies are a type of band that is perfect for small venues like Mountain Winery. The ambiance was great. Suzanne & I enjoyed the evening. What’s not to like: good music, starry night and beer in our hands!

This past weekend, I pitched one of our tents in our backyard. May be it was my attempt of compensating the camping trip we missed out on last month.

Katelyn & Allison were excited at the idea of sleeping outside in a tent. After helping me pitching the tent, the girls started “moving” in. It’s only a slight exaggeration as they lugged all their favorite things into the tents: books, teddy bears, blankets, sleeping bags, pillows, toys, snacks etc..

After dinner & washing up, I changed the girls into long sleeves and we headed out with a flashlight. Suzanne showed up in the tent for about 10 minutes before retiring to our comfortable bed and catching up with her Nip/Tuck episodes. We read a few books under the flashlight which each girls fight over all nite. The overcast killed my promise to the girls about sleeping under a starry nite. Katelyn really wanted to see the stars, so she kept waiting for the stars to come through, which they never did.

The girls had a fun night and a good sleep. I on the other hand woke up with a very sore back. 🙂
